Poor quality and customer service September 10, 2010 Professor Mark 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had repeated serious problems with this netbook. I have dealt with tech support twice and had to return the unit twice. Customer service is no help whatsoever. The unit I have is clearly a lemon and I am getting no satisfaction from Toshiba. Avoid them like the plague.
It makes a great first impression September 10, 2010 Evann Myhre I received my Toshiba Mini NB305-N410 BN (the brown model) yesterday. Shipping was very prompt and I was easily able to track my package on FedEx's website, though for some reason not on Amazon.com. It was shipped by Beach Camera out of New Jersey and took only a few days to get to me in Rhode Island.
I also ordered a Built NY zippered sleeve for the netbook. I have seen them in stores and have always imagined that they would provide good protection. Stylish, cheap, and effective.
I am very impressed with the netbook so far. I am planning to use it for writing, email, music and not much else, so a netbook was a great option for me. I love that the battery doesn't stick out of the back like the one on my husband's two-year-old Lenovo netbook. The textured pinstripe lid is very handsome and doesn't attract fingerprints.
The keyboard took me a few minutes to get used to, but it didn't take long until I felt confident typing quickly. I should note that I am not a touch typer so those of you who actually type properly might have more difficulty as the keys are wider than they are tall. The tab key is quite small but I'm getting used to it. I'm happy that the unit has two full-sized shift keys and dedicated page up/down keys.
The first thing I did after plugging in the netbook and turning it on was to uninstall a lot of the bloatware that comes preinstalled. I removed the Bulletin Board that Toshiba provides as well as the Norton Security program (which more or less does nothing, in my experience) and a financing program that Toshiba had bundled, among other things. I am running the netbook with the factory-installed 1GB of RAM and am having no problems. Even Hulu runs smoothly in Google Chrome. If you want to update to 2GB of RAM I've heard that it's very easy and I'm sure you'd have no trouble. For me, it would be an unnecessary expense.
To those of you who are as annoyed as I was that you cannot change the wallpaper with the Starter edition: We are not alone. There are several programs easily found by a quick Google search that will allow you to change the wallpaper with little effort. Some come with sample images and most will let you use images from your hard drive or that you found on the internet.
I should note that the netbook comes packed with a suite of games unlike anything I've seen before. Some of them may be trials, but it's still impressive. I've never seen a netbook with games installed, so I'm quite happy to have my Spider Solitaire back (it's an sickness).
I have some minor annoyances with the unit, as I would with any computer.
1. The row of indicator lights on the bottom right hand corner is, for some reason, really annoying me. I will likely get used to it and hardly give it a second thought some day, but honestly, there are too many lights. I don't need to know, for example, that the computer is turned on; I can see that. I don't even know what some of them are trying to tell me.
2. The speakers really are very quiet. When I read this in other reviews, I thought for sure that people were being dramatic. My husband's netbook has so-so speakers and I can listen to music on it just fine. The Toshiba is so quiet I have to be alone in the room to watch a video or listen to music. I suppose I could get some external speakers, but they're a pain to set up every time you want to watch something. For now, if there's something else happening in the room, I just use headphones.
3. My unit has a section along the brown edge of the screen (about an inch long, on the lower part of the left side) that is scraped away. It hasn't affected the screen at all and is barely noticeable until you're in the right light. I have no idea what might have caused it, but it's a quirk that I noticed and thought I'd mention.
And yes, I numbered these to show you that I have three lonely problems with this netbook and am otherwise very happy. It's sleek, sexy, and it has been working great. If I run into any other problems I will update the review. For now, I couldn't be happier with my choice.
Awkward keyboard September 10, 2010 Irene Purchased this for my teenage daughter. It seemed like a great netbook, but my daughter repeatedly complained about the keyboard. It wasn't a malfunction, but rather just seemed to be the way that the keyboard was designed. The keys needed to be pressed directly in the center in order to type and at just the right sensitivity - so when typing quickly there were often errors. We thought at first it was just a matter of getting used to the keyboard, but after almost a month we decided to return it.
Excellent value September 9, 2010 Dave (Stafford, VA) I already have one Netbook, an Acer. It is over a year old and is used exclusively for presentations. I bought this as I thought it was loaded with Windows 7 Starter. I did not realize it was loaded with XP. However, it works like a charm. I use it for a lightweight companion. It has an automatic drive lock feature that can be disconcerting, but after you get used to it, you realize it protects the HD. Battery life is phenomenol. I have always received excellent service from Toshiba Laptops. I hope this does as well.
Pretty decent. September 9, 2010 CAT (New York) Light weight and ideal as a secondary on-the-go internet and email portal. Sleek looking except for the battery that protrudes a little. I definitely don't get the advertised 11 full hours of battery life; on average I get 7-8 hours. Would anyone know why??
